Straight or box wagers? Your call.
Play straight, and your digits have to drop in exact order. That is where the biggest money sits. Play boxed, and they can land in any order, so you cover more ways to hit for a smaller prize. The maths is simple: a boxed payout is the straight payout split across every way your digits can fall.
Take 1-2-3 on Pick 3, where a straight hit pays 750 to 1 online:
- Play it straight, and you collect only if it drops exactly 1-2-3.
- Play it boxed and those digits can land six different ways, so the box pays 125 to 1 (750 split six ways), and any of the six orders wins.
- Play 1-1-2 boxed, and there are only three ways it can fall, so the box pays 250 to 1. A repeated digit means fewer combinations and a bigger boxed return.
Want both? Run straight/box on the same number. Catch the exact order and you collect the straight and the box together. Miss the order but land the digits and the box still pays. That is why smart money often covers every angle on a single number.
